As I sit here on the deck of my new listing at 55-143 Naupaka Street, I am captivated by the sight of eight kite surfers skimming across Laie Bay. Watching the kite surfers sail across Laie Bay in wide arcs then hurl up the front of a frothy wave and become air borne for what must be 15 feet…. I realize I am actually holding my breath!! They float down slowly, gently right onto the ocean to begin another wide arc heading in the direction of Flat Island and the point that separates Malaekahana Bay and Laie Bay. The red, orange, purple and yellow sails against the cloudless azure sky, and the turquoise and green ocean is just amazing. Mesmerized, I just can’t look away.
Laie Bay is wide and has a wonderful reef system so when the tide is low enough, many families will come here to explore the tide pools and wade out to Flat Island which is a bird sanctuary and at the Malaekahana end of the Bay. Although rare, I have seen monk seals here sunning on the white sand beach. There are three green sea turtles that graze in one particular area here in the Bay. They seem to hang out there. I look for them every time I come, whether I am showing the house or just checking the property.
The deck on this seaside cottage is protected by a line of Ironwood trees that allow just enough of the trades and ocean breezes to drift through the home. Whomever placed this home on this lot deeply understood the exceptional location of the lot on Naupaka Point . It is not too close to the end of the point and not too close to the beach. The height of this lot is great too, not too high so you can clearly see turtles or any other sea life cruising by.
I am sure there are many more than the three turtles in Laie Bay, but like the kite surfers they have become familiar. Just like the warm morning sun on my face, the sound of the rolling surf at the bottom of this property enters my brain and that languid feeling of relaxation spreads through the rest of me. . it is palpable and you can count on it….I really understand why this house is called Hale Pililani.
As a property owner on Laie Bay, I have come to recognize and appreciate all the moods and seasons of this bay. In Winter it is spectacular to watch the winter surf crash and cascade down the bay side of Pulemoku Island which sits on the outer edge of the Bay. With binoculars, you can see whole pods of whales blow by in January and February.
In the Spring, the beach is wide and swept clean. The moonrises on the bay are so beautiful it is beyond anything you thought you could imagine. With only about 33 privately owned beach front lots and only 31 privately owned bay front lots on the Laie Bay side of Naupaka Point, this peaceful little community is the Hawaii I grew up loving.
